Here we go again! Time to put your AS3 hat back on since it’s time for our annual 2010 AS3 Code as Art Contest! Deadline for Wonderfl AS3 submissions will be 10pm Manila Time (GMT +8), May 26, 2010. Winners will be announced on May 30, 2010 and will be posted on the Phlashers website.

Prizes

1st Prize: Adobe CS5 Suite license
2nd prize: Adobe Flash Builder 4 license + sweet Adobe Notebook (the organic kind of notebook)
3rd prize: Adobe CS5 T-shirt! (writer’s note: “Personally, I like this one.”)

What to do

1. Create something awesome in pure Actionscript 3 code which must not exceed 5kb or 5120 bytes when copied and pasted to a text file. The code will be run on Wonderfl.net.
2. Your entry will be judged on aesthetics, creativity, originality, and PURE AWESOMENESS. Bonus points in judging will be awarded for code aesthetics, readibility, witty variable names and witty comments in code! Nobody likes boring code. (ASCII art is encouraged!)

Mechanics

For starters, only Phlashers members can join. If you’re not a member and you’re reading this, then just sign-up (it’s free!). You’ll also need to make an account in Wonderfl.net where your submission will be viewed.

• When creating a Wonderfl entry, tag your entry with: phlashers2010 and enter the following header comments in your code:
  // Phlashers 2010 AS3 Contest
  // http://www.phlashers.com
• You can create additional classes within the provided textfield
• No loading of external assets (you may use Flash’s internal drawing API or ASCII characters for art assets)
• Only use internal Flash libraries for your code and not any 3rd party external libraries. (Wonderfl supports Flash 10 libraries). See other samples at Wonderfl.net for what can be done with Wonderfl.
• You must e-mail the URL of your AS3 wonderfl entry to the address core [at] phlashers.com along with your full name, e-mail address, website/blog/twitter and a short description of your AS3 app.
• You may submit multiple entries (but you may win only 1 prize)
• Finally, additional bonus points in judging will be awarded for creative usage of ASCII art in your code (hehehe)

Some requirements

• You must be either a Filipino citizen, residing in the Philippines, a Filipino residing overseas, or of Filipino descent to participate. I guess you can also be considered Pinoy if you can eat balut without throwing up. (Photographic evidence required! ;P)
• All participants must create an account and join the official Phlashers page on Adobe Groups. Make sure you enter your full name and website/blog when filling up your profile.
• You must be a part of the Phlashers mailing list to be qualified to join.

About Wonderfl

Wonderfl is a service where you can build a Flash swf online. Write Actionscript3 code in a textarea, and your code will be compiled server side into an swf. Your compiled Flash will be reloaded automatically in the right side of the page, so write code and see it real-time.

The new Phlashers WP theme titled Phlashers United v0.3 is finally here. After several revision changes (mostly due to IE6’s amazing grasp of CSS), this theme is finally ready to replace the ugly one we used to have.

This is the first wordpress theme I’ve designed and I actually had lots of fun working on it. I’ll try to make more themes in the future should anyone think that this one is cool. If you want to help make this theme better, kindly report any bugs or browser issues you might come across. I’ll be posting revision changes below and credits for all bug reports.

Naz, no polls muna, the poll  plug-in was responsible for wrecking the old db and it gave me nightmares. This theme isn’t widget-friendly yet, I’ll try to get that working once I get my superpowers back.

• 100% cross-browser compatibility (IE6 too, but it can go to HELL for all I care)
• integrated sprites to lessen all http requests
• finalized comments template for IE6 compatibility
• added a template hack to be able to view all archives as a Page and not as a List
• removed the footer because IE6 just won’t cooperate

v0.2:

• redesigned the markup to accomodate the liquid design for IE6
• initial comment template markup
• added the Log-In/Register fields to the sidebar for easy access (and a few other blings)

• liquid layout design markup
• full template designs excluding comments.php

Fellow Phlashers member JP Tiangco just released a new Flash game, The Green. Composed of charming graphics reminiscent of The Behemoth’s Alien Hominid, it’s a combination of a platformer and fighting game where you finish waves of enemies in different levels. Check out JP’s other games here.
